Monk Little Dog was conceptualized by Kim Sung-jae of Kim's Licensing and produced by Timoon Animation, SAMG Animation and Millimages. The series premiered on June 16, 2009 on Canal+ in France and ran until June 11, 2010. Its development as an animated series goes back to 2005, though it originated from a series of storybooks with plasticine characters released in 2006, including the notable book Monk's Mouth Country Trip. Unlike the storybooks, which included one human character, the animated series has no human characters.

The series features a main cast of anthropomorphic dogs: Monk, a white bull terrier who is cheerful but clueless and chronically unlucky; Ding, a yellow English cocker spaniel who is Monk's arch-rival and Kimmy's love interest; Kimmy, a pink poodle who is Monk's crush and Ding's girlfriend; and Ben, a brown and tan bloodhound who is Monk's lazy, always-asleep best friend. Recurring characters include Sushi, Kimmy's pet pussycat; Bubul, a gray pit bull and Monk's best neighbor; Bar, an American Bulldog; Loo, a brown chow-chow; Mi-hie, a comic book superhero; Peace, a naughty and smart lebrel; San-say, a female dog master of karate and kung-fu; Sally, Bubul's wife; Jimmy, an emo Old English Sheepdog and Kimmy's cousin; The Tweets, Monk's house owners; Mr. Beaky, Monk's pet parrot appearing only in 'Monk and the Birthday Cake'; Nonk and Jonk, Monk's parents; Mimmy, a gold-amber-yellow poodle; and Len, Ben's dad who only appears on Monk's TV. The series was broadcast in the UK by CITV, in Australia by ABC3, in Indonesia by Global TV (now GTV) from 2011 until early 2012 and later by RTV between 2014 and 2016, and in Latin America by Cartoon Network and Boomerang.
